The Great Outdoors (Hiking Edition)

If you know my wife you know she hates the winter time.  It may be the cold weather or the short days, probably both.  I’m sure she’ll blog about in the middle of November this year.  I tell her she suffers from SAD.  There comes a time at the end of Winter when it is just warm enough to get out of the house for the day.  Casey is stir crazy by this time suffering from cabin fever and insists we get out and get some fresh air.

I try to kill two birds with one stone, wear the boys out and get some fresh air.  So, we go hiking.  Nothing big; a local park, a state park, or just following a trail in the back yard of mawmaw and pawpaws house.  I’ve collected a few of the pictures to share with you.  As always each one tells a story.

This is one of my favorites!  B3 is strapped in and ready for action!  This is on an early Spring morning behind my in-laws house.  They have a clearing that runs along a creek about 2 miles long beside of their house.  It is a nice little nature trail and the boys love it.  B3 loved the cool air hitting against his face on this brisk morning.  Casey and B2 didn’t make it to the end of the trail with B1 and B3 and myself.  We saw a gaggle???  of wild turkeys and a few deer on the way out.  You will see the Jeep baby carrier pretty consistently.  I think I may invent one with four holsters for the whole family!

This one is at a county park that has some nice hiking and bike trails.  They have horse and hiking trails that are marked.  B2 was our guide on this trip.  He kept wanting to veer off to the horse markers so we could see horses.  The boys were decked out in their newly acquired shirts from Grandpa.

One of my new discoveries is Hanging Rock State Park in North Carolina.  It is only a little over an hour drive for us and the views are great.  The boys had a great time on these trails.  We had to take a few breaks because it was a good little hike.  The carrier must not be to bad as you see B3 knocked out for most of the trip up the mountain.  Why are the images so grainy?  Someone forgot the camera on this trip!  We had to rely on B2’s Fisher Price digital camera.  We should have stopped while we were ahead.  After the climb up Hanging Rock the boys wanted to see some waterfalls.  We hiked down to the waterfalls and no one wanted to go back to the car.  Don’t try to overdo it!

Another disclaimer*: Don’t try to rake leaves on a Sunday afternoon in Fall!  As you can see B3 and I were getting a lot done.  If you look to the right you can see B2 jumping in the leaves we worked so hard piling up in the backyard.

What are some of your outdoor activities when Winter transitions into Spring?
