“God was caught off guard this time.” “God doesn’t judge people.” “Mother Nature is angry” and other false statements have been repeated numerous amounts this past week. Whether it was Pat Robertson, Rick Warren or Danny Glover (Yes, the actor from Lethal Weapon) everyone has shared their opinion on this tragedy. I also read an editorial on the NPR website supposedly from the devil to Pat Robertson.
So, let’s look at the different views:
God – First off, God is never caught off guard. His sovereignty covers all actions, all places at all times, period, better yet exclamation point! God does judge sin and all matters of unrighteousness. Romans 1:18 – “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;”
So God is in control of all things either directly or indirectly by lifting His hedge of protectin and letting the devil have a little more leeway. This was exhibited in the Book of Job. I won’t go into detail here about commentary on Job, but it is a book with great applications.
Devil – The devil does not have control of the weather or rule nations. In Matthew 8:26-27 we read the great account of Jesus calming the wind and the seas and one of my favorite passages, “What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him!”
Us, Humans – There are only two kinds of people on this earth. Not, black & white, rich & poor, skinny & fat, etc. You are either Saved or Lost.
I will preface this by saying no one knows the intentions of God. No one can explain God’s reasoning for His ways are not our ways. You probably have your own ideas and thoughts on this and I urge you to share them with me.
Does God judge entire nations? Sure, Sodom and Gomorrah… Is this what happened to Haiti? As I stated before, I have no clue. Could He be judging the entire country for their behind closed door voodoo practices?
I think one problem with our society today is that we need detailed explanations for everything. Why did this happen, how could this happen? We will never have these answers this side of eternity. Why continue to seek these answers?
So, Where is God in all this?
Firstly, God is Love! 1 John 4:8. Our faith and promise in Christ rests on salvation and redemption. Will this tragedy turn the people of Haiti closer to God? Will the survivors see God’s grace and mercy on their lives and be drawn to Him? If God is love is He in all the relief efforts to help the survivors? Will He be there to comfort, heal and save the lost? In short, YES.
What is your reaction to this earthquake?
I see this as yet another reality of the brevity of life. No one is promised tomorrow! I said earlier there are two kinds of people, Lost and Saved. If you went to sleep tonight and never awoke where would you spend eternity? This is a fact of life in Haiti today and to many people all over the world everyday. The Bible clearly states that we will spend eternity in one of two places, Heaven or Hell. There is no purgatory or an in between place where someone can pray you through. Your destination is not determined by how good of a person you are or your family religions/traditions. It is solely based on your acceptance that you are a sinner and that Jesus Christ paid your sin debt on Calvary. John 14:6 – “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”
This has also opened my eyes and renewed my burden to see the lost hear the good news that Jesus saves and has made a way for us to spend eternity with Him.
