Genesis 1 – 3

Wow, where do I begin.  I could write for days on these first 3 chapters.  I know most of us have probably read these chapters a million times.  I’m going to list the big topics of these three chapters that stood out for me.

Firstly, God was, is and always will be.  We read In the beginning God…  We are walked through the days of creation and on the seventh day He had rested.  We then see the creation of Adam in God’s image, from dust and God breathed life into him.  I go back to a discussion I had with a coworker a few months ago.  He insisted that when we die here on earth our lives are over.  I tried to explain to him that our bodies and our souls are two separate beings.  One is temporal, our body, and one is eternal, our souls.  They are independent from one another.  God formed Adam’s body from the dust, but until God breathed into his nostrils he was not a living soul.

We also see God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden and two named trees were in the Garden.  The Tree of Life and the Tree of knowledge of good and evil.  Eve was created from Adam as a help meet for him in the Garden.

A walking talking snake came to talk to Eve.  That within itself is pretty scary.  Adam up until this point sole purpose in life was to worship and fellowship with God.  The serpent pushes Eve to eat of the fruit of the tree so that she can be as a god.  We see this still in the world today the seeking of knowledge to try and explain away God.  Man uses science to try and explain the unexplainable miracles of God.  We try to enlighten ourselves to be on a level playing field with God.  Also importantly we see Satan is working his way into the family by any means necessary.  We need to be on the lookout of what we let in our houses and what we allow our family to interact with.  The serpent could have just as easily gone to Adam and tempted him, but he chose Eve.

Adam followed his wife into sin instead of heeding God’s command.  Still today we see man following others and taking his eye off of God to please the world.  We all know the consequences that they face and everyone continues to face.

Adam and Eve are a typical picture of sinners when God returns to the Garden after they have eaten of the fruit.  Adam and Eve hid.  People today think they are hiding their lives and their secret sins from God.  Secondly, we see the famous blame game.  Adam blamed Eve and Eve blamed the serpent.  Still today people try to blame their sins on others or make excuses.  In the end God punished all because all were to blame.

Side note, a few months ago B1 asked us who named Eve.  We find in Genesis 3:20 Eve first refered to by name.  Further study on the tree of life would be pretty interesting.  I assume that Adam and Eve never ate of the tree of life.  One of the reasons that God kicked them from the garden is so that they could not eat of the tree of life.

God has given us all free will to seek after Him or to pursue sin.  So many times we pursue sin and when we are caught in it or convicted of it we try to place the blame on anything or anyone besides ourselves.

  1. “God formed Adam’s body from the dust, but until God breathed into his nostrils he was not a living soul.”

This is something that I had never thought of before. Thanks for sharing.
