Why Do I Blog?

I was recently at a women’s retreat with quite a few women who also had blogs.

(side note) It was an amazing retreat that I’m still processing which is why I haven’t written anything about it to date.

Anyway, during meals often times we would discuss our blogs and talk about things like what we blogged about, what information we chose to disclose on our blogs, and why we blogged in the first place.  As far as I can remember we’ve never really discussed here on our blog why it is that we choose to blog in the first place.  My short answer to this question is because I don’t scrapbook.  It’s true, I’ve done a little scrapbooking, enough to realize that it’s just not my cup of tea.  The last time I tried to scrapbook I pulled everything out, started cutting pieces of paper, had photos strewn everywhere, and then my kids woke up from their nap and I had a huge mess to try to clean up.  Since I don’t need extra messes in my life blogging works better for me because it only involves a computer.

I don’t blog because I’m a great writer.  Some people do because they are, but if you’ve visited here much you know by now that I’m not a writer.  I blog because I want my kids to have some record of their childhoods.  I want them to see fun pictures of the things that we’ve done over the years and I want them to read the cute stories that come along with raising a family.  But as you may know all of our posts aren’t flowers and rainbows and I pray that those are the posts that they will read as adults that will help them when they are going through similar struggles in their lives. My hope is to one day get our blog printed in book form for each of our children to have, yes there are places that do that.

So why not just write in a journal, why make it accessible for anyone to read?  Well that’s pretty much what a blog is or at least that’s what this kind of blog is.  As far as making it accessible to others, that’s okay with me for now.  You will notice that some stories about our kids don’t have their names attached, there is a reason for that.  There may come a time as our kids get older that a private blog will be more appropriate we’ll just have to see how that goes but for now I don’t feel that we’ve shared more than we should have.  Having others read our stories and struggles I feel okay about for the time being and I pray that someone will occasionally get some help from or be encouraged by something we may write.

So that pretty much sums it up.  So now it’s your turn.  If you read blogs tell us what kind of blogs you enjoy reading, and if you blog tell us what your reason for blogging is.
