Bleach Pen T-Shirts

Today we had an extracurricular day in school.  We took the day to do some things that we have a hard time fitting into our normal school day.  B2 had a 4H fishing camp this morning so David took the day off to go with him and B3 tagged along.  B1, B4, and I stayed home and B1 fixed everyone a healthy lunch as his first project.  He served mini pizzas with turkey pepporoni, carrot sticks, and a strawberry and whipped cream dessert.  It’s always nice to see the smile on a child’s face when they create something that everyone enjoys eating.  Our next project was something that I’ve been reading about on the Internet and have been wanting to make with the kids for a while.  You make designs on t-shirts using a bleach pen.  Here is a great tutorial if you’re interested in making one of your own.  I thought they turned out really nice, here’s a look at them as they were still drying.

The older kids were able to do theirs with minimal help and the younger ones were able to choose their own design and help with a few of the straight lines.  I found it cheaper than tie dying and just something different.  We completed our evening with a pool visit for P.E.  The kids love having days like this mixed in during our school year and I’m happy to give it to them.  Do you guys that homeschool ever try to mix in days like this and if so what kinds of things do you enjoy doing?

  1. Great idea! I had just recently heard of reverse tie-dying: Taking a colored shirt and spritzing with bleach water. I haven’t heard of using a bleach pen before- love it!! Hmm.. I might need to “borrow’ this idea. Thanks!
