Favorite Hymn

We’ve been adding singing to our nightly devotionals.   Pray for Casey and the kids, I know I am no singer.  I am loud and love the Lord but the joyful noise may be debatable.  I have a problem finding the right pitch, but that is another story for another day.  The kids really love hymns and I thought it would be fun to add some of their favorite songs.  B4 even requests Jesus Loves Me and This Little Light of Mine.

Right now we are singing It Is Well With My Soul and The Solid Rock.  The story behind It Is Well With My Soul gets me every time I read it.

This hymn was written after two major traumas in Spafford’s life. The first was the great Chicago Fire of October 1871, which ruined him financially (he had been a wealthy businessman). Shortly after, while crossing the Atlantic, all four of Spafford’s daughters died in a collision with another ship. Spafford’s wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram, “Saved alone.” Several weeks later, as Spafford’s own ship passed near the spot where his daughters died, the Holy Spirit inspired these words. They speak to the eternal hope that all believers have, no matter what pain and grief befall them on earth.

So what are your favorite hymns?

  1. hmmmm. tough one. Amazing Grace -when you listen to the words, really listen, it stirs the heart.

How Great Thou Art, hard to sing, but beautiful.

Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus – beautiful song.

  2. Yeah, tell me about it. We sing in our devotions too, and boy, it is interesting sounding. But the Lord said make a joyful sound, He didn’t mention whether or not it would be painful to listen to! I don’t know about a favorite hymn. We just take a hymnal and start picking songs out. Of course, the kids always want to sing Jesus loves me so….

  3. Probably, Amazing Grace. Just within the last few years have I been able to sing it without waterworks. That was my mother’s favorite hymn and she requested it be sung at her funeral. Due to her blindness the phrase, “was blind, but now I see,” gets me every time.
